More about the project
Serving Our Country: a history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in defence of Australia is supported by an Australian Research Council grant. It is led by Professor Mick Dodson at the National Centre for Indigenous Studies at the Australian National University in Canberra.
Our partners in this research are: The University of Newcastle, Australian Catholic University, Department of Defence, Department of Veterans’ Affairs, National Archives of Australia, Australian War Memorial and AIATSIS.
This national project looks at the history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service men and women’s contribution to the Australian defence and auxiliary services from the 1890s to 2000.
We want to find out how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service men and women saw their participation, how it affected them, their families and communities and the nation. We would like to record oral and video histories with ex-service men and women to help us understand more about their service and to achieve greater recognition of their contributions. The project team are also keen to see service related photos, letters and postcards from family.
