Boomalli presents I am Gurgun: A sole retrospective of work by Dr. Bronwyn Bancroft AM displaying artworks throughout Bundjalung artist Bronwyn Bancroft’s artistic career. The exhibition acknowledges Bancroft’s connection to Bundjalung Country, motherhood and activism which has shaped her identity as an Aboriginal artist and woman.
Bancroft is an artist, administrator, book illustrator and writer. Her artistic practice is composed from Aboriginal oral histories and stories in which she strives to heighten respect and awareness for the First Peoples of this land. Her artistic practice also includes her own design company, Designer Aboriginals Pty Ltd since 1985. Bancroft was one of the 10 founding members of Boomalli and has been the senior strategist since 2009. Bancroft’s artwork has been acquired by all major Australian galleries, state libraries and private collections and has been displayed internationally.
Curated by Kyra Kum-Sing, I am Gurgun includes various works from Bancroft, showing the extensive nature of her career over five decades. Works on show have been loaned from the Art Gallery of NSW, Powerhouse Museum, Australian Museum, National Gallery of Australia, Artbank, Macquarie University and private collections. This includes works on canvas and fabric from the land rights era to brilliant paintings and illustrations that acknowledge and respect intergenerational family stories and histories.
