We all Stand on Sacred Ground: Learn, Respect and Celebrate

NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920′s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Indigenous Australians.

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year’s theme is We all Stand on Sacred Ground: Learn, Respect and Celebrate.

For many years the City of Sydney has supported NAIDOC Week events within the community and for the fourth year we will be hosting our popular NAIDOC in the City event. Come along and learn more about the oldest living culture through food including the ever popular earth oven and a special guest appearance from highly acclaimed Indigenous Chef Clayton Donovan.

Enjoy song, dance and art and be entertained by well known singers, including Emma Donavan and the Putbacks, participate in modern and traditional dance, try your hand at weaving, learn about traditional culture and enjoy a day in the park with your family and friends celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

In celebration of this year’s NAIDOC Week theme, the City of Sydney has also launched a range of new content on Barani featuring a diverse collection Sydney’s Aboriginal archaeological sites.
