Indigenous Voices: Who gave the words?

Title_Imagining the people

Pencil sketches for a portrait of Bungaree by Charles Rodius, 1829 (Mitchell Library, State Library of NSW - SAFE / PXA 615)

In this free illustrated talk as part of the Guringai Festival 2017, historian Keith Vincent Smith will look at Indigenous informants and cultural brokers from the Sydney area, including Bennelong, Patyegarang, Bungaree and Maroot the elder. Their legacy is a gift of knowledge from the past, words and meanings, that now help revive the language they spoke.

Every year the Guringai Festival celebrates First Australian culture and heritage in the Northern Sydney region. Check out the website for the program of events, from 26 May to 9 July 2017.
