Jack Patten reads the resolution at the Day of Mourning Conference on 26 January 1938: 'We, representing the Aborigines of Australia…on the 150th Anniversary of the whitemen’s seizure of our country, hereby make protest against the callous treatment of our people…and we appeal to the Australian nation of today…for full citizen status and equality within the community.' CarriageWorks presents an exhibition, Hereby Make Protest, from 17 June through to 18 July 2014.

In 1938, while Australia celebrated its sesquicentenary, Aboriginal leaders and activists rallied from across the Country to an all-Aboriginal Conference held in Australia Hall in Elizabeth Street, Sydney to declare a National Day of Mourning.

For Hereby Make Protest, Carriageworks has commissioned artists Karla Dickens, Nicole Foreshew and Jacob Nash to create new works evoking the fighting spirit of these Aboriginal political activists. This exhibition brings together artworks, important archives and found objects to tell the story of an important time in Australian history.

Carriageworks is at 245 Wilson Street in Darlington, on the corner of Codrington Street. It is an eight-minute walk from the Redfern Station. For more information, visit CarriageWorks’ website or 02 8571 9099 or email  info@carriageworks.com.au
