This month’s Black Markets held on Bare Island in Kamay Botany Bay National Park on Sunday 3 August 2014 will be a relaxed winter affair where visitors can browse our markets and in the afternoon enjoy plant, artefact and history talks on the rich history of the La Perouse Aboriginal community.

Featuring authentic Aboriginal products from La Perouse and beyond, and dance performances from Ngaran Ngaran cultural awareness, this month we are also launching a series of “history in a photo” talks by local Aboriginal La Perouse man, Peter Yananda McKenzie, whose diverse experience ranges from practising artist, musician and university lecturer.

Parents can browse the markets while children can learn how to fish or plant their own bush-tucker plants in recycled drink bottles. If art is their thing then children can paint their own story onto a boomerang or learn dot painting with local artist Jordan Ardler – either bring your own item to paint on or learn on a canvas.

Entry price onto Bare Island, which is usually only open for tours, is $2. Find out more on the website: firsthandsolutions.org
