There will be a suite of displays at a number of the City of Sydney’s libraries focussing on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture throughout NAIDOC Week and into the months of July and August 2014. The exhibitions were curated by Kat Henaway, Community Relations Officer for the City’s Library Network.
Surry Hills Library – Through our eyes
Through Our Eyes: A Sydney Story of Contemporary Black Dance (1972-1979) is a photographic display at Surry Hills Library from 3 July – 28 August 2014, during library opening hours.
Through Our Eyes looks at contemporary black dance in Sydney from 1972; the display was curated by Carole Johnson. Black dance was created with, and by, Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander peoples to communicate their culture through theatrical performance. Through this display at the library, Carole tells this story from its beginnings in Redfern in response to the political climate of the day. The exhibition includes activities leading to the establishment of Black Theatre Arts and Culture Centre and the National Aboriginal and Islander Skills Development Association (NAISDA).
The launch of the exhibition will be held on Thursday 17 July 2014, 7-8.30pm. The evening will consist of speeches from Carole, other key figures and performances from NAISDA Dance College. Book online or call 9265 9333.

Newtown Library – Remembering
Join Gangari Artist, Kathryn Dodd Farrawell, as she discusses her art display Remembering at Newtown Library. Kathryn will speak about the art works that have been inspired from the storylines of (and before) the intervention of the Queensland Aboriginal Protection Acts 1897 that breached Aboriginal Human Rights to their lands. This event is a personal exploration of the achievements and contributions of Kathryn’s family and all Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Peoples in defending and building Australia. Kathryn was a Finalist in the prestigious Sir William Dobell Prize for her drawing in 2009 titled ‘Love Endures All Obstacles’.

Kings Cross Library – Yawkyawk and Lilies Textile Display
The Yawkyawk and Lilies textile display at Kings Cross Library features features a range of beautiful silk screen printed textiles from Babbara Designs in Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. The artists depict aspects of traditional life including spirit figures, plants and woven pandanus objects, in their stylised and contemporary designs. The display runs from 1 July through to 28 August 2014.

Customs House Library – Erub Ewer Meta Artists
Erub Ewer Meta Artists work from the Art Centre on Darnley Island in the Torres Straits. They revitalise Meriam Mir culture through their arts and crafts. The fabrics are screen or lino printed, with designs inspired by traditional stories and the shells, fish and other sea creatures which are features of their environment.
